Sports Medicine

Lameness injuries plague horses of all disciplines and can be challenging and costly in both time and money to diagnose and treat appropriately.  Regular evaluations, preventive strategies, and early detection &  treatment are imperative in keeping your athlete performance ready. The team at F9 Equine is trained and equipped to keep your horse ready for competition.

Diagnostics:  A proper diagnosis begins with taking a detailed history, performing a thorough exam, and obtaining and interpreting quality diagnostic images.  Our Sports Medicine Diagnostics Include:

Performance Evaluations:  Let us evaluate your horse both standing and in motion to diagnose any hidden issues that are keeping your horse from performing at a high level.  We recommend semi-annual to annual evaluations depending on your horse’s needs.

Sleip Objective Gait Analysis:  Sleip is an AI powered tool that can help our team assess subtle changes in your horse’s gait.

Reproduction

Prior to opening his own practice, Dr. Fitzgerald gained considerable reproductive experience while working at the 6666 Ranch in Guthrie, TX. While there, Dr. Fitzgerald was part of the team that managed over 15 breeding stallions, bred over 600 mares on-site using artificial insemination each year, shipped cooled or frozen semen to approximately 700 or more mares yearly, and performed approximately 300 embryo transfers yearly.  Reproductive Services currently provided by F9 include

Reproductive Evaluations:  We will examine your mare, ultrasound her reproductive tract, and discuss her history and future plans to determine the best strategy to meet your reproductive goals.

Breeding Services: Let our team handle all the steps and logistics.  We offer both outpatient and drop-off (full boarding) for the below services:

Artificial Insemination with Fresh Cooled Semen
Deep Horn Insemination with Frozen Semen
Uterine Lavage
Hormone Testing
Twin Reduction

Embryo Transfer Services:  Embryo transfer is perfect for owners 1) who want more than one foal per year from the same mare or 2) that have an older mare and need a younger mare to carry the pregnancy or 3) with mares that are actively showing and cannot carry a pregnancy due to their show schedule.

Embryo Flushing - performed onsite at our clinic
Embryo Transfer - we can transfer the embryo into your recipient mare OR one of our recipient mares.  F9 can also accept embryos flushed (or thawed) elsewhere and shipped to us for onsite transfer

Dentistry

Experts recommend that all horses have yearly oral examinations. Young horses between the ages of 2 and 5 often have retained caps (baby teeth) in which early veterinary involvement can prevent future problems. Older horses need special attention in order to maximize comfort and longevity.

Horses of all ages can develop hooks and sharp points and will benefit from annual floating as well. Equipped with both time tested hand floats as well as the latest in motorized dental equipment, F9 Equine is ready to address the dental needs of your horses with the following services:

Oral Examinations
Dental Float & Equilibration
Hook, Wave, Ramp Reductions
Overlong Tooth Reductions
Dental / Sinus Radiographs
Cheek Tooth Extractions
Wolf Tooth Extractions
TMJ Injections

Surgery

F9 Equine offers many elective and emergency surgeries. Intravenous anesthesia makes it possible to safely do many procedures in the field, weather and conditions permitting.

Depending on your horse’s need, we can perform surgery on your horse under standing sedation, or laying down under general anesthesia. Some of the surgeries F9 Equine can provide include castrations, wound/laceration repair, hernia repair, tumor removals, cryptorchid removal, ophthalmic surgeries, tenotomies, check ligament surgeries, bone sequestrum removals, and neurectomies.

Wellness Services

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Benjamin Franklin was right – especially when it comes to horses. Proper preventive care can save the average horse owner a great deal of money and heartache in the long run. Preventive care should consist of more than just annual vaccinations. The cornerstones of equine preventive medicine include good nutrition, proper immunization, appropriate deworming, routine dental care, and annual wellness exams. Proper immunization can be life-saving, particularly when it comes to Rabies Virus, West Nile Virus, Sleeping Sickness, and Tetanus. While vaccinations can prevent these deadly diseases, they may not protect your horse at all if given in the improper location, expired, or stored improperly. Deworming recommendations are continuing to evolve - talk with F9 Equine about utilizing strategic deworming, quantitative fecal egg counts, and fecal egg reduction count tests to avoid the unnecessary overuse of dewormers that may contribute to the increase in parasite resistance to anthelmintics (dewormers).  Wellness services offered:

Wellness Exam (includes body condition scoring and discussion of diet)
Vaccinations
Core Vaccines
Risk Based Vaccines
Deworming
Fecal Testing
Endocrine (Metabolic) Testing
Comprehensive Blood Evaluation
Dentistry
Sheath Cleaning
Coggins Testing (EIA - Equine Infectious Anemia)
