Young horses between the ages of 2 and 5 often have retained caps (baby teeth) in which early veterinary involvement can prevent future problems. Older horses need special attention in order to maximize comfort and longevity. Horses of all ages can develop hooks and sharp points and will benefit from annual floating as well. Wellness Services “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Benjamin Franklin was right – especially when it comes to horses. Proper preventive care can save the average horse owner a great deal of money and heartache in the long run. Preventive care should consist of more than just annual vaccinations. The cornerstones of equine preventive medicine include good nutrition, proper immunization, appropriate deworming, routine dental care, and annual wellness exams. Proper immunization can be life-saving, particularly when it comes to Rabies Virus, West Nile Virus, Sleeping Sickness, and Tetanus. While vaccinations can prevent these deadly diseases, they may not protect your horse at all if given in the improper location, expired, or stored improperly. Deworming recommendations are continuing to evolve - talk with F9 Equine about utilizing strategic deworming, quantitative fecal egg counts, and fecal egg reduction count tests to avoid the unnecessary overuse of dewormers that may contribute to the increase in parasite resistance to anthelmintics (dewormers). Wellness services offered: Wellness Exam (includes body condition scoring and discussion of diet) |
